Tips to keep skin healthy during Ramadan

During the fasting month, your body will need to adapt to a new eating pattern. Well, so does your largest organ – the skin!

While fasting, your skin may get less hydration as fluids in your body are sent to other vital organs instead. So it’s possible to see some dry patches and breakouts on your skin. That’s why it’s important to keep your skin hydrated by practising proper skin care. Here’s how:

Limit your sun exposure

As the sun is an added burden to an already dehydrated skin from fasting, it’s key to stick to the shade during Ramadan since unprotected sun exposure stresses out already vulnerable skin. And, of course, it goes without saying that you need to apply sunscreen before heading out, one with SPF 50 at the least, and reapply if you are outdoors for more than 2 hours.

You can try our dermatologically-tested Cetaphil sunscreens that offers optimal sun protection without clogging pores.

Drink more water after breaking fast

A long day without water intake, plus constant exposure to heat and air-conditioning could leave your skin feeling parched. So when it’s time to break fast, ensure that you drink sufficient water until the start of the next fasting day to rehydrate your skin.

To get more nutrients out of your liquids, try infusing it with yummy fruits like lemon, strawberry and apple. That way, you don’t just hydrate your skin, but also boost its elasticity and help flush out your body’s toxins.

Eat right during breaking fast

To ensure efficient nutrient intake and prepare your body for the next fasting day, opt for healthy, nutrient- and vitamin- rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are also beneficial for your skin. Take plenty of watermelon and cucumbers, as well as tomatoes and celery. They’re packed with nutritional minerals and salts that help your body absorb water better. To prevent skin dehydration, add vitamin-rich foods like carrots, leafy vegetables, meat and whole grains into your Suhoor and Iftar meals too.
