How to start on a skincare routine

A smart skincare routine is the key to getting a clear, glowing complexion. Despite the seemingly endless array of skincare products on the market, taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be complicated. Read on for the basic elements of daily skin care.

1. Cleanser

Some soaps can be harsh and irritating, so look for one that respects your skin’s pH balance and respects its natural protective barrier, like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. It gently cleanses and moisturises at the same time, for skin that doesn’t feel tight after cleansing.

Cleanse twice a day – once in the morning and once at night – and be sure to pat your skin dry after. Be gentle and avoid rubbing your face with towels.

2. Day moisturizer

After cleansing, apply moisturizer to your face while your skin is still damp. This helps trap moisture and keep your skin soft and smooth.

You might think that you can skip this if you have oily skin, but you still need to moisturize - even visibly oily skin can lack water. Just be sure to use a moisturizer designed for oily skin, as it will be specially designed not to clog pores.

3. Sunscreen

Sunscreen isn’t just for vacations and days at the beach. Applying sunscreen to your face and body daily can help protect against UV rays, which cause cumulative skin damage and premature skin aging.

Choose a product with broad spectrum UV protection, to protect you from both UVA rays which cause aging, and UVB rays that cause sunburn. Try Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense SPF 50+ sunscreen, which is suitable for all skin types – even sensitive skin.

And remember, while water resistance helps ensure that your sunscreen doesn’t wash off easily with water or sweat, extended exposure to the sun requires a second helping of sunscreen. So, be sure to reapply every 2 hours, or after vigorous toweling and heavy perspiration.

4. Night moisturizer

Take advantage of your skin’s natural repair mechanisms which are more active at night by applying moisturizer before bed. So, when you wake up to face the world, your skin will feel balanced and smooth. A nourishing cream like Cetaphil Moisturising Lotion protects from dryness throughout the night.

5. Eye care

Don’t neglect to care for your eyes! The skin around the eyes is more delicate than the rest of your face, so use a dedicated eye gel or cream before going to bed. It’ll help hydrate, brighten and smoothen the eye area, and help prevent lines and dark circles.

6. Don’t forget your body

Because we’re covered up most of the day, there is a tendency to give the skin on your arms, legs, back and trunk second priority – but the skin on your body can also get dry and irritated without proper care.

Be sure to use a gentle body wash and make it a habit to moisturize immediately after stepping out of the shower or bath. Try cleansing with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, and moisturising after with Cetaphil Moisturising Cream.
